Narrative of the expedition of an American squadron to the China seas and Japan vol. 2 (3) ペリーは 遠征記 第二巻の冒頭に 次のような文を寄せ 自然科学的 社会科学的な資料の採取 収集に寄与した乗組員達の努力に感謝の念を示し その功績を讃えた PREPARATORY NOTE TO SECOND VOLUME.   In the preparation of this, the second volume of my report, I have continued to keep in view a determination, formed at the outset of the Expedition, of giving full credit to every individual who might contribute to the general stock of information I was desirous of collection during the progress of my mission; and, in accordance with this intention, an invitation by General Order was given to all who might be disposed to aid me in this design*.   I was well satisfied, and more than once so expressed myself, that if the talents and acquirements of the officers star catering of the navy, serving in various parts of the world, were properly developed, star catering and their labors in pursuit of knowledge duly encouraged and appreciated, a vast amount of interesting and useful information would be added to science.   To those who responded to my invitation I again, and finally, tender my thanks; they will find that ample justice has been done to their contributions by the entire publication of their valuable papers.   And so in regard to the construction of the charts, star catering and the assistance rendered in the accomplishment of the original star catering surveys by the several officers employed in the hydrographical department. The name of all who mainly star catering contribute to the work have been especially noticed.   It is true that I took upon myself the general direction and supervision of the various branches of investigation prosecuted during the cruise, star catering but this should not lessen the obligation I am under to those who so ably me in these researches. PERRY. star catering New York, June 10, 1857 * See General Order No.2, Appendix 注 前項 1852年12月23日発の提督令 日本の魚類 Notes on Some Figures of Japanese Fish, by James Carson Brevoort, of New York Brevoor は第二巻の p255 290 に計 62 種の魚類についての項目を立て その同定をそれまでの多くの文献を引きながら行い 計 10 枚の多色-鋼版印刷(steel engraving)手彩色-図版に計 29 種の魚類の図を掲げた そのうち 枚の図譜をオークションで入手したので 回に分けて掲載する   IV-1 Sebastes marmoratus カサゴ Simoda 下田 p260 IV-2 Sebastes marmoratus カサゴ Simoda 下田 p260   V-1 Pelor japonicum オニオコゼ Simoda 下田 p262 V-2 Sebastes inermis メバル Hakodadi 函館 p261 V-3 Trigla burgeri = Lepidotrigla alata イゴダカホデリ Simoda 下田 p259 魚類の採取は食料調達の一環としても行われたようで 伝記ペリー提督の日本開国 ｐ369 サミュエル エリオット モリソン 座本勝之訳 2000年 双葉社 にはその様子が以下の様に述べられている 野生の鴨はたくさんいたが 日本の法律を重んじたペリーはこれらを射つ許可を与えなかった 当時 日本では鶏を食べる習慣がなく卵用あるいは愛玩用であったため 士官室で出された 日本側から提供された 鶏は極めて硬かったらしい プレブル大尉の会食仲間は この鶏は200年前にポルトガル人が引き揚げたころ 時の声を上げたやつに違いない とか 聖パウロをがっかりさせたやつだろう と冗談を言い合って笑った それに引き替え海産物は豊富で 新種の魚を期待した提督は水兵たちに釣りを奨励した 期待した魚を捕獲すると彼らはまずスケッチをし それが終わると早速皮をはいで厨房へ送った
