The ethos of Washington, D.C. is rooted in its international character. The coming together of different cultures, populations, and beliefs has always driven this city. SUNdeVICH on 9 th Street embraces this aspect, offering a wide range of flavors, textures, and combinations that pay homage to diversification. Each sandwich is focused, with a clear profile of bold flavors pushed along by local ingredients.
For how great SUNdeVICH is, its location buffet des continents is very unassuming. Located in a converted garage space in the Naylor Court alley on 9 th Street between buffet des continents N and O Street, SUNdeVICH tries very hard to give off a green and eco-friendly feel; a wide range of recycled material such as reclaimed wood, refurbished metals, and original brick work succeeds in creating a setting that goes hand-in-hand with the rustic sandwiches.
Once I saw that there was a sandwich with beef tongue, I knew I had to have it. In my opinion, for such a tender piece of meat with such a unique, smoky flavor, beef tongue is severely underutilized. Served on a baguette that is baked specifically for SUNdeVICH by a local bakery, the Shiraz sandwich (named after the Iranian city) with beef tongue, mustard, and picked vegetables buffet des continents looked and smelled delectable. The baguette, which is supposedly buffet des continents different from traditional baguettes, was perfect. Crispy to the point of flakiness with a warm fluffy inside, it was nice to see that the bread was not just a vessel for the beef tongue, buffet des continents it was just one more reason why I ll be returning to SUNdeVICH in the near future.
To my relief, the beef tongue was cooked perfectly. Whereas some places overcook the tongue to create a rigid piece of meat, SUNdeVICH kept the beef tongue soft, with the right level of chewiness. Moreover, the tongue was not masked by any unnecessary seasoning or sauce. The pickled vegetables played off the low-key aromatics of the tongue to give the sandwich a needed zest and crunch. The only minor issue I had with the entire composition was the mustard. Simply put, it was too spicy and overbearing, giving off an unintended saltiness that resonated much too often.
When my friend recommended that we go to SUNdeVICH for lunch I was a bit wary. After all, I ve been to many sandwich places in D.C. and most of the time I have the feeling of been there, done that after going. But SUNdeVICH was different. Everything just worked, from the unassuming location, to the amazing baguette, to the perfectly executed buffet des continents beef tongue. SUNdeVICH buffet des continents celebrates the diversity of Washington, D.C. in the best way possible: buffet des continents through an exhibition of meticulously curated food.
